Summary

I would particularly like to praise the review of BlackOxford from 2019, it and many others more then adequately sum up so much that is wrong in the Catholic Church, but I think BlackOxford is particularly acute in his praise for the Martel and his recognition of the particular flavour the book and its contents that arise from its French origins and gives it such strength。 BlackOxford is right pointing out how the book makes plain what we all knew and what was obvious but unstated。 I, like many I would particularly like to praise the review of BlackOxford from 2019, it and many others more then adequately sum up so much that is wrong in the Catholic Church, but I think BlackOxford is particularly acute in his praise for the Martel and his recognition of the particular flavour the book and its contents that arise from its French origins and gives it such strength。 BlackOxford is right pointing out how the book makes plain what we all knew and what was obvious but unstated。 I, like many gay men growing up in intensely catholic families, cultures and countries (in my case Ireland) before the varied and numerous sex scandals (hetero and homo) knocked the Church off it's pedestal in such an overwhelming and comprehensive manner, was perfectly aware of the 'gay' undercurrent within the Church。 Although as a adolescent and teenager I would not have used, or even known, the term 'gaydar', but my gaydar made it plain that the Church would be a place that someone like me could find a place in and that as a non heterosexual I would be welcomed by many within it and that my sexuality would be seen as proof of a vocation to the priesthood。 Of course that welcome/tolerance had, of necessity, to be unstated。 But there was no doubt that it was there。 Fortunately for me I avoided making the mistake of confusing my desires with a vocation because, in my pig-headed adolescent way, I was in many ways a literalist and I did not see how the call to be a priest and be celibate and give up any possibility of a family did not apply to a gay person as well - though at the time I would have seen it in more crude, but graphic terms as, you don't fuck women, you don't fuck men。The one area this book doesn't tackle is that ultimately it is not just the Church's teaching about Gays and homosexuality that is wrong it is the Church's whole approach to sex。 If this book was about heterosexual activity amongst the priesthood it would be just as bad - in terms of the church's failure to live up to its teachings。 I remember in Ireland how devastated people were by a much respected priest who wrote articles, appeared on TV and spoke with many people about the challenges of living with a abiding by the church's teachings。 His authority came from the fact he was a priest, living a celibate life who had dedicated his life to serving his flock。 When he died, it came out that he lived with a woman and had several children。 As far as people were concerned he was revealed as a hypocrite, asking for respect for a living a life of celibacy and service, when in fact he was no different from any other man doing a job and going home at the end of the day to his family。 Which is fine but the church has demanded for its priests, bishops, etc。 a respect and automatic position of authority and a right to be heard, listened to and obeyed based on that celibate status and life of service that priest lived。At the heart of the catholic church's problems is their attitude to sex - no matter how they dress it up now for 2000 years it was only the celibate, presumably virgin, who were the best, most godly, and worthy to be leaders and role models。 That it was a lie, that a celibate priesthood was something that never existed, was ignored and covered up。 The heroic few who lived up to this impossible ideal were presented as the norm and the basis on which the great and the good demanded and held on to their power over the faithful。 It also distorted and allowed the failures of priests and religious to live up to the ideal to be excused。 Put crudely, if the boy got an erection he was asking for it, if the girl failed to scream and fight back so that she died, she must have wanted it or be complicit in it。 And this perverse way of blaming the victim has permeated, up until very recently, are views of those who tried to report the rich and the powerful for sexual misconduct。 The child Maria Goretti made a saint in 1950 because she was killed while resisting a man trying to sexual assault her - but she retained her virginity that was the core of her sainthood and the way the story was told to Catholic children around the world。 The implication that those who failed to remain 'spotless' even if they died trying were failures。The fact that an institution which had just repressive views on sex in general, ended up as the home for thousands of self-hating gays is not surprising。 Particularly when you remember the age of most of those who lead the church and also that the church, as any corporate body, has a bureaucracy or civil service that runs it and considers that it knows best, no matter the views of a current, temporary ruler, no matter how supposedly autocratic and all powerful。 The history books are full of monarch who while supposedly all powerful masters of Kingdoms and Empires found that there power was restricted and their orders ignored by a powerful civil service that they were supposed to be the master。 Even in today's world it instructive to note that it took years of fighting for Price Charles, in the UK, to get either the Royal Household or the Guards regiments, both of which he and the Queen were supposedly the head of, to become more ethnically diverse。 The Catholic Church is no different to another organisation or institution - those who really run things, the bureaucrats - can hold off change or reform for a long time。But, while they claim so much has changed and is changing, you have to wonder at an organisation which can allow the grotesque Marcial Maciel to create the Legion of Christ and use it exploit sexually and financially its members and supporters。 Marciel was lavishly praised and supported not because his failure were unknown, there were many early warnings and denunciations of Maciel, his sins were not unknown, they were overlooked by John Paul II and the Church because of the money and supporters he brought to them。 The fact that the institutional failures of the church during John Paul II's papacy and his close association with men like Maciel did not hinder his rapid promotion to saint shows how little changes in the Catholic Church。Thus is a really fine book, thought provoking, for an English speaking audience to realise how unimportant England/USA are in terms of the development of the Church。 It is very much a continental institution where French, German and Italian writers are what matters, even in terms of general literature。 English authors, let alone theologians have had no impact in the Vatican culture。 There is much to relish and enjoy in this important book 。。。more

What does it refer to?I always take it as a sympathy which Dante expresses for his gay characters。 Even though there are no references about homosexuality in Paradiso, yet the positioning of a gay character in Inferno or Purgatorio tells us that Dante somehow acknowledges homosexuality as a part of a human life and symphatise the actors。These debates on homosexuality have been rolling over years leading to some pros and conts as well as new perspectives esp in the religious arenas。 Pope Francis once said, "If someone is gay and he searches for the Lord and has good will, who am I to judge?”, He has gained a sympathy from millions people with his sentence。 This sentence also gave a glimpse of hope to our LGBTIQ friends to be acknowledged in the religious arenas。 A hope that years later has gone by the Pope's further statement: "the church cannot bless the same-sex union or marriage。"Little did we know, the practices of homosexuality also do exist in the religious institutions like the Vatican。 There are countless of bishops, cardinals and some other religious actors which are committed to same-sex union。 Some of them are even aware of their sexual preference and are torn between sin and mortification。 Such hypocrisy which circle in one of the most powerful religious institutions。 These stories behind the closet and its hidden political agenda iare available to read in this book。Enlightening yet entertaining。 。。。more
